You're My Favorite
I like to think that we all have that one article of clothing in our closet or dresser that means so much more than the rest of our wardrobe. It might be a pair of pants or an old t-shirt. Maybe a pair of socks or even a scarf. Regardless of what that article of clothing might be, the value of it is infinitely higher than the rest.
Whenever you wear this clothing, it might trigger happiness or joy. Maybe it brings back a memory connected to how you got it! The sentiment of the clothing is what makes it so valuable. It is this value and comfort that causes us to hold onto this article of clothing for so long.
Mine isn’t a shirt or pants nor is it socks or a scarf. After moving in with my sister after graduating highschool, I can vividly remember getting my first couple of paychecks from my new job. I was renting a mini studio from my sister’s landlord for a measly $200 a month. As an eighteen year old getting about $600-$700 a month, I felt like first class. Without any responsibilities, it was very easy to spend my money carelessly.
I remember making an account with an app where you can buy just about anything for cheap prices. The catch is that half of the products are scams. Fortunately, I only used it to purchase a few things. The very first thing that I bought with the app was a black cardigan that descended down to just below my hips and sleeves that wrapped tightly around my wrists.
The anticipation of waiting for the cardigan to arrive was excruciating. When it had finally arrived, I was like a child on Christmas day. I pulled the cardigan out and immediately fell in love with it even if it wasn’t everything I had hoped. In the pictures, it looked a little more classy than it did now.
Let me get one thing straight… This cardigan isn’t a desirable article of clothing. Parts of the shoulders and collar are thinned out and patchy. The entire bottom part of the cardigan is frayed beyond belief. As unbelievably hideous as this cardigan looks, I could never bring myself to throw it out. Not only was this the first purchase I made for myself as an adult with my own money but it was the first time I got to shop for myself without anyone else telling me what norms I should conform to.
When I put on that cardigan I feel a sense of freedom. I feel like I can do anything. So many times I have been asked why I wear it. I’ve been told often that it's falling apart. That it’s ugly. News flash… I know that already!
I like to think that everybody has an article of clothing like this. Maybe it makes you happy or it makes you feel free. Maybe it makes you feel comfort because you wore it during a tough time and it reminds you that you can get through anything. Perhaps it makes you feel empowered because not a single person can tell you what you can and can’t wear.
So it could be a shirt or a pair of pants. Socks or maybe a scarf. Shoes or it could even be a jacket. What is your favorite article of clothing in your closet or dresser and why does it mean so much to you? Leave a comment and let me know!

Definitely my one pair of sweatpants (predictable I know). They're tapered, fall just above my ankle, and are high waisted. My confidence just skyrockets in them. Why? I don't know, but I think I look good in them and I get to be incredibly comfortable at the same time. The story of acquiring them is nothing special (bought them at target) but the feeling is the best. I WISH I could wear them to formal events.
