    From The Help to How to Get Away With Murder all the way back to East Side/West Side, Cicely Tyson was and remains to be one of the most influential black women to ever grace the television screen. Tyson was an extraordinary actress whose work could only be defined as elegant, poised, and graceful. 


    Cicely Tyson brought a warmth to this world unlike anyone else in this profession. From a young age, Tyson knew that she would never be able to afford the luxurious life of an actress, but that wouldn’t stop her from achieving her dreams. She used her career as a platform to address the issues of the race she was born into. In doing this, Tyson inspired, empowered, and uplifted the black community and became a crucial part of our country. 


    Tyson strongly believed that beauty resides in our own artistry in the way we express ourselves. She showed many black men and women to embrace their beauty and hair. As one of the most unforgettable women in history, Cicely Tyson’s legacy will flourish for decades to come. Compiled below are nine photos that encapsulate Cicely Tyson’s grace and beauty.



    Though she has left this life and moved onto the next, Cicely Tyson will eternally remain one of the most powerful and inspiring black women in film and the lessons that she taught to America will endure for generations.

  “If you see two men holding hands, cross the road and stay away from them.” “That transvestite is wearing women’s clothes... Disgusting!” “Stop running like a girl, Frankie!” “Of course God loves you. But if you continue down this path, you won’t be able to have a relationship with Him.” These are just a few of the things that I heard growing up whether from friends, family, school, or church. Growing up in a household that primarily practiced Southern Baptist Christianity, it wasn’t very difficult for me to tell that I was different from all of the other boys. I would find myself trying on my mother’s dresses and heels while she would work her doubles at the pharmacy to support her two children and stay at home husband. Right after she would finish doing her own makeup, I knew that it was time for her to go into her room and do her hair.
